He threw his fastball where he wanted it to go. His breaking stuff had good late movement. The Cincinnati Reds finally had to put him on base to get him out of the game. Arrieta retired his first 18 batters and struck out nine in seven impressive innings, leading Chicago to a 7-3 victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday night. "He was commanding his pitches," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "His pitches had life." Arrieta (4-1) struck out eight during his perfect start, including the side in the sixth. He had a leadoff walk in the bottom half and came around to score when Homer Bailey (7-4) hit Starlin Castro with the bases loaded. That little trip around the bases proved costly. Rookie Billy Hamilton started the seventh with a single up the middle for Cincinnatis first baserunner. "I was pretty gassed there, unfortunately," Arrieta said. "Pretty humid night. Long inning there in the sixth. Running the bases, which really isnt all that tough in itself, but you couple that with being on the mound and having that long layoff, it adds a little bit to it." Arrieta allowed two runs and three hits while improving to 3-0 with a 1.14 ERA in five June starts. It was his first win of the season at Wrigley Field, where he has yielded three runs in 23 innings over four starts. "Really its just kind of going through the process that I feel like gives me the best chance to have success," he said, "and going through it day by day and sticking with it." Anthony Rizzo belted a solo homer for the second straight night for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Welington Castillo drove in two runs, including a sacrifice fly in Chicagos three-run eighth. Devin Mesoraco homered for the fifth straight game for Cincinnati, matching a franchise record. Mesoracos 14th homer came with one out in the ninth against Neil Ramirez. "It was late in the game. All the other homers were to help the team win, and important, big homers," he said. "They actually meant a lot. That one didnt really help us come back, so it doesnt mean as much." Mesoraco also had an RBI single in the seventh and scored on Jay Bruces double before Arrieta struck out Ryan Ludwick to complete his masterful night against one of the majors hottest lineups. Cincinnati had won three straight and nine of 12, averaging 6.7 runs and 10.2 hits per game in that stretch. The Cubs used four relievers to get through the eighth, and Ramirez finished Chicagos 12th win in 42 games against Cincinnati over the last three seasons. The Reds had runners at first and second in the eighth when third baseman Mike Olt made a nice diving stop on Todd Fraziers grounder for the final out of the inning. The start of the game was delayed 53 minutes by rain, but the pitchers adjusted quite nicely to the late start. Bailey retired his first 11 batters, striking out five. But Rizzo drove the first pitch he saw in the fourth inning into the basket in right-centre for the first of his three hits and his 17th homer this season. Castillo added a run-scoring double in the fifth, and the Cubs chased Bailey while scoring two more in the sixth. Nate Schierholtz had a sacrifice fly for the first of his two RBIs. Bailey allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two in his first loss at Wrigley since he pitched 5 1-3 innings in his first career appearance at the cozy neighbourhood ballpark on Sept. 13, 2009. The right-hander began the day with a 5-1 record and a 2.56 ERA in seven road starts against the Cubs. "Just bad pitch execution in the last inning or two," Bailey said. "That was probably the only thing I saw." NOTES: Hamilton extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games. ... Brandon Phillips tripled, homered and doubled in his first three at-bats, Reynolds beat his former team for his first major league win in two years, and the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Colorado Rockies 8-3 on Saturday night. Making his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Louisville to fill in for injured Tony Cingrani, Reynolds (1-2) allowed three runs on seven hits over eight innings in his first career start against his old team. Reynolds was a first-round draft pick by Colorado in 2006 but was traded to Texas two years ago after a series of rough outings, especially at Coors Field. "I hadnt done particularly well here," he said. "I learned what not to do, but I was definitely more comfortable coming out here now. I feel Im a better pitcher now than I was before. I think that kind of showed today." Reynolds struck out five, including three in the seventh, and walked none in his first big league win since July 2, 2011, against Kansas City for the Rockies. The eight innings represented the longest outing of his career. "To go out there and eat up some innings and give our bullpen a little bit of a rest was big," Reynolds said. "I just tried to let the whole coming back to Coors Field not even factor in." Phillips helped put Reynolds at ease with a big night at the plate. The All-Star second baseman scored three runs, drove in two and just missed becoming the first Reds player to hit for the cycle since Eric Davis did it against the San Diego Padres on June 2, 1989. Phillips struck out and grounded sharply to third in his last two at-bats. "It would have been nice to get it done, but tonight was all about Reynolds," Phillips said. "He pitched his butt off. Im happy for him to go eight innings like that. We needed this win and for him to go out and pitch lights out, he kept us in the game. He kept the ball down and Im very proud of him." Phillips, whose two RBIs gave him a career-best 99 on the season, began thhe night with an RBI triple that rolled to the centre-field wall.dddddddddddd He scored on Joey Vottos groundout. Phillips also connected in the third off Juan Nicasio for his 17th home run, then doubled to left in the fifth and scored. Colorados Todd Helton remained one hit shy of 2,500, going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts a night after homering twice and matching a career high with six RBIs. "You can be great one game and have the hat trick the next," Helton said. The Reds, leading 3-0, added three more runs in the fifth. Shin-Soo Choo, who had three hits, singled to start the inning and Phillips doubled, his third extra-base hit of the game. Nicasio (8-7), who had pitched erratically throughout his outing, intentionally walked Jay Bruce to load the bases with one out in the fifth and was relieved by Wilton Lopez. Lopez, though, was charged with a balk before he threw his first pitch, advancing all three runners, including Choo, who trotted home. Ryan Ludwick then singled for the third time, scoring both Phillips and Bruce to put the Reds up by six. The Rockies scored in the bottom half on pinch-hitter Jordan Pachecos RBI double, but the Reds responded with another run in the sixth. Reynolds doubled over the head of left fielder Corey Dickerson and went to third on Choos single. Phillips struck out before Votto singled up the middle to score Reynolds. Choo added an RBI double in the eighth. Dickerson homered in the eighth, a two-run shot off Reynolds that reached the right-field seats. Still, the Reds received a huge lift from Reynolds. "He has added the cutter. He threw it well and was able to keep it from out over the plate," Colorado centre fielder Charlie Blackmon said. NOTES: Rockies RHP Tyler Chatwood (right elbow inflammation) was set to be activated from the 15-day disabled list to start Sundays series finale against RHP Mike Leake (11-5). ... The balk by Lopez was his third of the season, tying him with Rockies reliever Rex Brothers and former Rockies reliever Edgmer Escalona for the NL lead. ... Phillips had 98 RBIs in 2009.
