He roared when the Royals reliever struck out Chris Colabello to end the threat. "He came through with flying colours," Duffy said with a smile. Buoyed by the clutch pitching, Kansas City churned out three doubles in the bottom half of the inning Wednesday night, scoring all their runs in an eventual 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. "Frasor was huge with the bases loaded," Royals manager Ned Yost said. Just about everybody who stepped on the mound for Kansas City came up big. Duffy allowed only a homer by Josh Willingham over 5 2-3 innings, despite walking a season-high six. Scott Downs and Kelvin Herrera gave back a run in the seventh, but Herrera struck out Brian Dozier and Willingham with runners on second and third to preserve the Royals one-run lead. Wade Davis worked a perfect eighth, and All-Star closer Greg Holland survived two wild pitches that sent Eduardo Nunez to third base by striking out Sam Fuld for his 28th save. "Anytime you lose a battle like that its frustrating, especially with game on line," Fuld said. "Holland made a great pitch. We battled him." The Twins Phil Hughes (10- showed no lingering effects from a comebacker off his right ankle that cut short his last outing. He allowed only three singles before the sixth, when the Royals were able to finally string together a series of hits that gave them the lead. Omar Infante led off the sixth with a single and Salvador Perez added a tying double moments later. Alex Gordon followed with an RBI double to centre, and Mike Moustakas pulled another run-scoring double just inside the first-base line to give Kansas City a 3-1 lead. The Royals bullpen and defence made each run seem huge. Perez made the first of several memorable plays in the third inning, when he picked Nunez off first base with a snap throw. Duffy picked Fuld off first in the fourth, and Dozier was thrown out at the plate on a base-running mistake later in the inning. "Im trying to make an aggressive play," Dozier said. Perezs best play may have come in the seventh, when he leaped from the behind the plate to grab a sacrifice bunt and throw the runner out at first. Herrera followed with his strikeouts to leave the go-ahead run standing on second. "That was a big play right there," Yost said. "That was a great play by Sal." WADE IN THE WATERS Davis continues to dazzle in his setup role. His scoreless eighth inning Wednesday night gave him a 0.99 ERA in 43 games. The former starter is still the only pitcher in the major leagues with more than five appearances who hasnt allowed an extra-base hit. GORDO DOUBLES UP Gordon finished 3 for 4 with two doubles, the All-Star left fielders first three-hit game at Kauffman Stadium since May 18, against Baltimore. It was the first time he had two doubles in a game since doing it April 12, in Minnesota. WILLINGHAM THE LONER Willingham has hit 11 homers this season, eight with nobody on base. That includes the last six. And the fact that the bases were empty when he went deep Wednesday night proved costly when Minnesota was unable to coax another run across until the seventh inning. TRAINERS ROOM Twins: Catcher Joe Mauer (strained right oblique) took batting practice in the cage without any problems. Right-hander Mike Pelfrey began his throwing program after surgery on June 10 to relieve numbness caused by a nerve in his throwing elbow. Royals: First baseman Eric Hosmer was in the lineup for the second straight night after missing time with a bruised right hand. He finished 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. ON DECK Twins: Right-hander Kevin Correia (5-12) attempts to beat the Royals for the first time in 10 career starts. He has a 0-5 record with a 4.91 ERA against them. Royals: Right-hander Yordano Ventura (7- tries to improve his fortunes at Kauffman Stadium, where he is 3-6 this year. His last home win came in relief July 13 against Detroit. LOUIS - Austin Davis has made the most of his improbable shot the St. Louis Rams, passing for 300 yards each of the last two games. The degree of difficulty is about to go up. Way up. The San Francisco 49ers enter Monday nights game with the NFLs No. 2 defence, making the going very tough even without key players from last season. Catch all the action on TSN1, TSN3, and TSN4 starting at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. Patrick Willis leads the way for San Francisco (3-2) which has stepped up its play lately. Last week, they did enough to compensate for a sputtering offence that leaned on five field goals and converted on a fake punt deep in their territory in a 22-17 victory over the Chiefs. Alex Smith found the going tough especially in the second half and Jamal Charles was held to 80 yards rushing. Patrick Willis, lets start there, coach Jim Harbaugh said. He is the kingpin in the middle. Harbaugh said tackle Justin Smith and linebacker Ahmad Brooks have also stepped up their play, plus nose tackle Ian Williams has been a find. Linebacker NaVorro Bowman has resumed running and getting closer to returning. Davis passed for 375 yards and two touchdowns last week at Philadelphia, nearly bringing the Rams back from a 27-point deficit in a 34-28 loss. The previous game, he passed for 325 yards although he was intercepted twice. Several players have proven reliable targets, including wide receivers Brian Quick, Kenny Britt and Austin Pettis and tight ends Jared Cook and Lance Kendricks. The 49ers took advantage of the extra day of preparation to learn more about a player who was fourth on the depth chart during the preseason before the job dropped into his hands due to injuries to Sam Bradford and Shaun Hill. Coach Jeff Fisher reversed field after the Rams bye and said Davis was his quarterback for the rest of the year, after repeatedly saying Hill was that guy when he returned from a quadriceps injury. Davis was a volunteer high school coach this time last year, getting re-signned by the Rams after Bradfords first season-ending knee injury.dddddddddddd So its still a nice rags-to-riches tale, but with a body of work to analyze. Weve really weve got as much tape on him as we would have if the other guy had still been the quarterback, defensive co-ordinator Vic Fangio said. So, its really not a whole lot different than any other week. The Rams (1-3) are a lot more concerned about solving the 49ers defence than Davis performing on national TV. Its just the next challenge, the next chapter, offensive co-ordinator Brian Schottenheimer said. Its just obviously a very good defence. Again, he doesnt have to do it by himself, we have to do it as a team. The game plan wont change much, if at all, to account for San Franciscos strengths. Running back Zac Stacy is probable coming off a calf injury that sidelined him last week and Benny Cunningham also been effective. Theyll certainly make some plays, they always do, Schottenheimer said. They will be tough stretches Im sure. This is probably an elite defence, but weve played some good defences. For a change the 49ers didnt beat themselves last week, committing just two penalties for 10 yards last week. Penalties remain a season-long concern for the Rams, whove also made enough critical mistakes to put a damper on hopes Fishers third season will be the long-awaited breakthrough. The defence has been a puzzlement, prone to giving up big gainers and limited to a single sack despite aggressive schemes under new co-ordinator Gregg Williams. Theres enough on his plate that Fisher isnt paying much attention to the 15-year anniversary recognition of the 1999 Super Bowl team. The team was honoured at a function Sunday night and will be the focus of halftime Monday night. Im actually thinking about the 49ers, Fisher said. Ive been here for a few years now. Im reminded on a daily basius inside the building, so Im used to it now. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Cheap Buffalo Sabres Gear Wholesale Calgary Flames Jerseys Cheap Adidas Colorado Avalanche Jerseys Montreal Canadiens Outlet Store Wholesale New Jersey Devils Jerseys Adidas Arizona Coyotes Jerseys Cheap Adidas Boston Bruins Jerseys Cheap Adidas Carolina Hurricanes Jerseys Chicago Blackhawks Shop Free Shipping Wholesale Columbus Blue Jackets Jerseys Dallas Stars Shop Free Shipping Cheap Adidas Detroit Red Wings Jerseys Anaheim Ducks Jerseys China Wholesale Edmonton Oilers Jerseys Florida Panthers Shop Free Shipping Wholesale Los Angeles Kings Jerseys Minnesota Wild Outlet Store Cheap Adidas Nashville Predators Jerseys Cheap Adidas New York Islanders Jerseys New York Rangers Winter Classic Jerseys Cheap Adidas Ottawa Senators Jerseys Cheap Adidas Philadelphia Flyers Jerseys Wholesale Pittsburgh Penguins Jerseys Cheap Adidas San Jose Sharks Jerseys St. Louis Blues Winter Classic Jerseys Wholesale Tampa Bay Lightning Jerseys Toronto Maple Leafs Outlet Store Vancouver Canucks Outlet Store Cheap Adidas Vegas Golden Knights Jerseys Cheap Adidas Washington Capitals Jerseys Cheap Adidas Winnipeg Jets Jerseys ' ' ' |
