BALTIMORE -- Bud Norris found a way to work around two lengthy rain delays. Mat Latos did not. That goes a long way toward explaining why the Baltimore Orioles beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 on Tuesday night. After rain delayed the start of the game for 23 minutes, another shower halted play in the top of the first inning for 1 hour, 46 minutes. Norris played catch and walked around during the delay. He returned to throw six shutout innings. "You want to stay loose, you want to pitch," he said. "Its your day to go." Latos threw his first pitch nearly 2 1/2 hours after the scheduled starting time. The right-hander gave up four runs in the first inning and a solo homer to Jonathan Schoop in the second to fall behind 5-0. "It (stunk)," Latos said. "You know, all of your adrenaline comes out of the bullpen. I like to create a tempo in the bullpen how I am going to pitch in the game. ... I felt really good coming out of the pen. Mother Nature must have snuck up on us again. Its the second time this has happened to me in two away games." Latos (5-4) yielded five runs and a season-high 10 hits over five innings in his first loss since July 27. Nelson Cruz delivered his career-high 91st RBI in the pivotal first inning with a single. Chris Davis and Caleb Joseph added RBI singles around a run-scoring groundout to send the Orioles to their seventh win in nine games. Baltimore withstood an eighth-inning grand slam by Jay Bruce to extend its lead in the AL East to a season-high 9 1/2 games. "You do whatever it takes to stay focused for the game," Cruz said. "I think we do a really good job in those situations." Norris (12-Spokojny allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked one. He was 0-3 with a 5.11 ERA in his previous seven starts against Cincinnati. "That was pretty impressive to go out there," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. Bruces third career slam, off Darren ODay, got the Reds to 5-4. In the Cincinnati ninth, Ramon Santiago doubled off Zach Britton with one out and took third on an infield hit by Billy Hamilton. Britton then got Todd Frazier to hit into a double play to secure his 32nd save. The game didnt finally end, however, until after a review of the final play. The replay confirmed that Hamilton got tagged in the baseline before Schoop completed the double play with a throw to first. "As a baserunner, you absolutely cannot be tagged there," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Its the only way they are going to turn two in that situation. Its those things you got to learn from." Cincinnati has dropped 14 of 20 and is 15-28 since the All-Star break. After the first delay, the first play left three people on the ground. Hamilton hit a liner off Norris leg, and the ball ricocheted toward first base. Norris dived on it and threw to first, too late, and Hamilton ran into umpire Mike DiMuro. Hamilton recovered from the collision but DiMuro left with an unspecified injury. Hamilton then stole second, setting a Reds rookie record with 55 for the season, before rain forced another stoppage. TRAINERS ROOM Reds: Cincinnati placed RHP Homer Bailey (elbow) on the 60-day DL, ending his season. Surgery "will be considered as something that would certainly rectify the problem," Price said. Orioles: SS J.J. Hardy was sidelined with back spasms but intended to play Wednesday. "Its as close to 100 per cent as possible," he said. 1B Steve Pearce (abdominal strain) expects to sit out the series. UP NEXT Reds: Dylan Axelrod (1-1) makes his third start of the season. He has a 1.64 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 11 innings. Orioles: Miguel Gonzalez (7-7) faces the Reds for the first time. The right-hander is 1-1 in four career interleague starts. "Well over 50 (per cent)," coach Claude Noel said Tuesday after practice, where the Jets were looking at ways to cut down the scoring chances theyve been giving away.Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - It took an extra session, but No. 21 Baylor prevailed over TCU, 66-59, on Saturday. Defenses shined in this game with the teams combining to shoot 33.6 percent and make just 3-of-25 from behind the arc. Taurean Prince scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bears (12-3, 1-2 Big 12), and Rico Gathers added 17 points and a career-high 18 boards. The Horned Frogs (13-3, 0-3) lost for the third straight game after finishing non-conference play undefeated. They have now lost 21 games in a row in Big 12 play. Kyan Anderson tallied 16 points for TCU, its only player to reach double figures. The entire game was played in a 12-point window in which neither team led by more than five until the Bears hit four free throws in the final 10 seconds of OT. With shots not falling from the floor, the teams needed to get to the line, but they are each among the worst free throw-shooting teams in the country. Baylor made 31-of-46 shots from the charity stripe, and TCU made just 15-of-28 attempts. I thought TCU defensively was outstanding, said Baylor coach Scott Drew. The good thing is we found a way down late to come back and get a win in the Big 12. At the end of the day, its tough to win the game let alone a road game. TCU took its biggest lead with 4:46 to go in regulation on Amric Fields layup, but a Prince dunk and Lester Medford three-point play tied the ggame.dddddddddddd With 1:21 to go, Karviar Shepherds jumper broke a 51-51 tie, but Kenny Cherys shot at the other end brought Baylor even. Baylor had possession of the ball with an approximate one-second difference between the shot and game clock, but TCU forced a shot clock violation with less than a second in regulation. Video replay showed 1.7 seconds remained for TCU to try and win in regulation. However, after Anderson received the inbounds pass, he stumbled and could not get a shot off. The Bears never trailed in overtime after Chery hit a pair of free throws on their first possession. The Frogs shot just 1-of-6 from the field in OT. We are a better team than we have shown, especially with free throws and turnovers. We just have to fix that, said Anderson. A back-and-forth first half ended in a 28-28 tie. After Baylor made three of its first four shots from the field, it made just two of its next 17. Kenrich Williams jumper with 4:37 to go in the first half put TCU up 21-19, but the Horned Frogs did not hit from the field again before the break. Game Notes TCU is 0-6 against Baylor since joining the Big 12 ... Baylor outrebounded TCU, 49-41 ... Bears other than Gathers and Prince combined to shoot 7-of-34 ... Anderson hit both of TCUs triples ... The Bears host Iowa State on Wednesday while Texas Tech waits until next Saturday to travel to Texas Tech. ' ' '
