Now the Bournemouth full-back is being talked of as a potential England left-back. Adam Bate caught up with him to find out how he did it… Is Howe due more credit? Assessing Bournemouths impressive season under manager Eddie Howe. Given that Charlie Daniels started out playing for Ridgeway Rovers, the same youth club that launched the careers of David Beckham and Harry Kane, its tempting to feel that the Bournemouth left-back was destined to make it to the top. In truth, there are times when the Premier League adventure hes currently enjoying must have felt a long way off.It wasnt even an inevitability for Kane, the player who Daniels used to give a lift to Leyton Orients Chigwell training ground when the striker was on loan there as a teenager. After all, the last time that the pair played alongside each other ended in a 3-0 defeat to Tranmere. Even so, Daniels remembers the potential. Up against Arsenals Tomas Rosicky in an FA Cup tie for 2011 for Leyton Orient He grew up where I grew up so I got to know him really well, he tells Sky Sports. He was only 17 so he wasnt really built like he is now but his finishing with left foot and right foot, you could tell there was something special there.Hes taken his chance because he finally got his opportunity. Thats something that a lot of youngsters dont get at big clubs.Although delivered with an easy charm, its a pointed remark given that Daniels himself was released by Tottenham following three loan spells and not a single minute of first-team action. At least he could be grateful to former Spurs coach Martin Jol. It was his advice that set Daniels on a different path by encouraging him to convert from a left-winger into a left-back.The problem is that while a strikers goals can demand attention, a full-back can only do so much to get back to the top - particularly when still at Orient at the age of 25. Its through promotion that you get the chance, says Daniels. For a lot of defenders it has to happen that way, unless you play when youre very young. A lot of managers will buy players that have played in the league before. But there are a lot of players in the lower leagues who could play in the Premier League. Charlie Daniels Its all about getting that chance. Whether someone would sign you is another thing. A lot of managers will buy players that have played in the league before. Thats not a criticism of managers, thats their prerogative. But there are a lot of players in the lower leagues who could play in the Premier League. You can see them coming through. Look at Aaron Creswell [who scored the opener for Tranmere in that game against Orient in 2011] or Michail Antonio [who played league football with six clubs before joining West Ham]. Theres a drive to give English players who do well in the Championship their chance. I hope it continues. So does Daniels believe he was ready for his chance back then? Id like to think I was, he says. With the coverage you get now, you can watch and analyse so many games so its quite easy to compare it to how you play. I always felt that if I did get the opportunity, I was prepared. I knew what to do and I knew how Id play if I did get the chance. Winning promotion from the Championship last season with Bournemouth Thankfully, I got it with Bournemouth. And if Im honest, I didnt really think itd be with Bournemouth. I dont think many of the lads did either. It was manager Eddie Howe who changed all that and after the Cherries got to the second tier, belief continued to grow. It was after wed played our first season in the Championship, says Daniels. We got to the end of the season and we all said to each other, We can win this league. There was no team in there that we feared or we felt was better than us. So our goal the following season was to get to the play-offs. Then we got to January time and wed played everyone and we really did realise we could win it. Thats what happened.Getting to the top flight for the first time in the clubs history was a story in itself. Instead, Bournemouth have enjoyed themselves in the Premier League and go into the weekend 10 points clear of the drop zone. Perhaps most remarkably, theyve done so by playing with the same style and much of the same personnel. Daniels hasnt missed a game since September. Daniels has scored three goals this season including a penalty against West Brom The gaffer said at the first meeting in pre-season that we were not going to change our philosophy, he says. This is the way he wants his team to play and the message was that we just had to get better at it. At the start of the season we were actually playing well but we werent getting the results. Thats when you start to think this could be a long season. There was a lot of media attention around the club and deservedly so given what had been achieved. I wouldnt say we got lost in it, but losing on the first day [to Aston Villa] was a big reminder that we had to step up. But once we settled down and got the euphoria out of the way, we started playing our brand of football and picking up points. We havent looked back. Only Matt Ritchie has more assists than Daniels for Bournemouth this season Daniels has thrived. As well as getting through his defensive work, he has scored three goals, provided five assists - only Matt Ritchie can match that - and completed more dribbles than anyone else at the club. Hes even been able to take his partnership with winger Marc Pugh into the Premier League too - one forged back in English footballs third tier.Im always wanting to learn, watching other players and their styles, says Daniels. When we were coming though the leagues, me and Marc watched lots of clips of Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar and their combination play. Guys like Jordi Alba and Marcelo in Spain, with their enthusiasm and willingness to get forward, are great to watch as a left-back too. Defenders - Distance covered in PL 2015/16 Player Team Distance Craig Dawson West Brom 389.2 km Simon Francis Bournemouth 358.1 km Charlie Daniels Bournemouth 356.0 km Toby Alderweireld Tottenham 355.3 km Hector Bellerin Arsenal 354.5 m For a defender to make that sort of attacking contribution in a newly-promoted team like Bournemouth requires serious energy levels. Daniels has covered more ground than any other left-back in the Premier League - and one of the two defenders above him is Simon Francis, the man on the other flank. Its been hard work but Ive enjoyed the hard work, says Daniels. Every time you get promoted, you have to improve yourself in every aspect of your game to match the demands of the next level. We put a lot of emphasis on our fitness at the start of the season because we knew that would be the bare minimum that we were going to need. Daniels has completed more dribbles than any other Bournemouth player The way we play is so expansive with the way we use the full-backs and the wide-play combinations but we also knew we werent going to have as much of the ball. So weve had to press the other teams and nullify their threats. Thats probably why Im up there on those stats. Its not gone unnoticed. Daniels was even linked with an England call-up in February. To even be mentioned is a proud feeling. It makes me feel like Im doing things right and improve even more, he says. Maybe that chance wont come. But even at 29, Daniels journey isnt done yet. I always just try to improve that little bit each week and you become a better player over time, he adds. Its taken time, but Charlie Daniels has got there in the end. Also See: Is Howe due more credit? Yet, legal analysts said Tuesday, expert witnesses who will testify for the defence could undermine the prosecutions efforts to prove Pistorius killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on purpose after an argument. The demeanour of the Olympian, often fumbling for answers and occasionally breaking into sobs, contrasted with that of prosecutor Gerrie Nel, who called Pistorius a liar and unleashed volleys of barbed questions. Social media buzzed that Pistorius is in deep trouble -- a South African talk show host wryly observed that the double-amputee runner had not "covered himself with glory" when his cross-examination ended Tuesday -- but experts said the trial has a long way to go. "Until the defence presents the rest of their case, you cant really evaluate the significance of any potential concessions that he may have made," said Kelly Phelps, a senior lecturer in the public law department at the University of Cape Town. The trial, which began March 3 and is expected to hear testimony until mid-May, reached a key stage last week when Pistorius took the stand to testify about the circumstances of Steenkamps killing in his home before dawn on Feb. 14, 2013. The Paralympic champion, 27, says he shot the 29-year-old model through a closed toilet door after mistaking her for an intruder, but Nel catalogued what he said were conflicts in Pistorius story that prove he made it up. The prosecution provided a "very clear narrative for the first time" of what it says happened on the night of Steenkamps death, Phelps said. The judge, she said, must decide whether Pistorius inconsistencies were a result of his clumsily trying to polish a story that is true in its fundamentals, or instead revealed an "elaborate coverup plot" after he murdered his lover. Phelps said the prosecution accused Pistorius of changing his account mostly on "smaller details" but that he had stuck to the "core parts of his story." Some commentators have speculated that Pistorius could face a lesser homicide charge that still carries long prison time in the event of a conviction. Still, during cross-examination, Pistorius gave a sometimes muddled account of the shooting. He said he feared for his life but also didnt intentionally shoot at anyone, prompting Nel to query if his defence was self-defence or "involuntary action." Inconsistencies in the athletes testimony include his statement that Steenkamp did not scream when he shot her but later saying his ears were ringing with the first of four gunshots and he would not have heard screams. A vital part of the prosecutions case is the testimony of neighbouurs who said they heard a womans terrified screams on the night that Steenkamp died; the defence says they actually heard Pistorius screaming in a high-pitched voice.dddddddddddd Pistorius credibility was further challenged by earlier testimony against him for three unrelated gun charges in which he denied any wrongdoing when questioned by Nel. Possibly in his favour was his lack of anger on the witness stand despite the prosecutions picture of him as overbearing and arrogant. Nevertheless, Marius du Toit, a former state prosecutor, magistrate and now criminal defence lawyer in South Africa, said Nel exceeded his goals in his cross-examination, even goading Pistorius into faulting his legal team while trying to clarify testimony. For example, chief defence lawyer Barry Roux said Pistorius fired two quick bursts -- the gun owners terminology for such a burst is "double tap" -- but Pistorius said he fired four shots in rapid succession. Du Toit, however, said the defence, which plans to call up to 17 witnesses, could still make it hard for the prosecution to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Pistorius is guilty of premeditated murder, which carries a penalty of 25 years to life in prison. Du Toit said he wasnt convinced that the prosecution had shown that he intended to kill, noting Pistorius fired roughly level with Steenkamps mid-section. Prosecution witnesses said the first bullet likely struck her in the hip. "If you wanted to kill someone, you would shoot in the chest or the head," du Toit said, adding that it was "not all lost" for Pistorius even though the defence has a lot of hard work to do. That work started right after Pistorius finished testifying. Roux, the defence lawyer, had the runner read out a Valentines Day card from Steenkamp that she allegedly brought him just before he killed her. In it, she tells Pistorius that she loves him. Roux then called forensic expert and former police officer Roger Dixon, who contradicted parts of the prosecutions case. Dixon said he conducted tests in Pistorius bedroom that proved it was very dark there at night, supporting Pistorius statement that he could not see Steenkamp in his bedroom on the night he killed her, and describing some aspects of the police investigation as "unprofessional." Phelps, the University of Cape Town lecturer, said Judge Thokozile Masipa could consider the prosecutors allegation that Pistorius sometimes faked distress in the witness box to wriggle out of a tough question. Otherwise, she said, the athletes outbursts would not affect the judge, who will deliver a verdict because South Africa does not have a jury system. "Her recognizing that trauma will have absolutely no bearing on her determination as to what his state of mind was when he was firing the shots," Phelps said.
